Delphi Medical Systems Introduces Customized Remote Monitoring Service for Medical Devices
Service enables medical device companies to diagnose, maintain equipment and manage inventory remotely
Release Date: October 18, 2005
TROY, Mich. – When medical devices like dialysis machines or respiratory devices break down, medical companies typically need to send a technician for on-site repair. These service calls typically cost $1,000 or more each time. Delphi Medical Systems, a subsidiary of Delphi Corp., has created a revolutionary "virtual technician" system that will enable medical companies to diagnose and repair these devices remotely through a secure website. This new customized service, unique to the medical industry, will greatly reduce the number of on-site service calls and provide faster help to the end consumer. The diagnostic feedback can also identify hardware problems, generate service calls, and automatically ship spare parts to OEM technicians in the field using Delphi Medical Systems' order fulfillment system. "This is yet another example of technology improving business practices within the healthcare industry," said Christophe Sevrain, managing director of Delphi Medical Systems. "This 'virtual technician' service now provides OEMs a constant diagnostic tool, in addition to having the ability to significantly reduce service calls." The "virtual technician" system is a customized monitoring service, based on Delphi Medical Systems' existing remote monitoring infrastructure that will allow medical companies to optimize the performance of their equipment. They can use this single system to access all of their machines in operation. The new system will monitor dialysis machines, vital sign monitors, respiratory care devices and infusion pumps. OEMs can use their Windows-based PC or PDA to access their machine's information transmitted through Delphi Medical Systems' secure website. If the data transmitted indicates the need for software upgrades or a system reboot, the action can be performed remotely through the system. The "virtual technician"' service, once customized for a particular OEM, will continually monitor all of that OEM's machines – including checking on the machine's battery life, sensors output and recorded events. Another service offered by the Delphi Medical Systems repair center is setting up a loaner machine for patient use while theirs is being repaired. Beyond remote diagnostics, the service can also monitor a machine's disposable supply – even being set up to automatically re-stock disposable supply items, such as infusion sets and glucose strips, using Delphi Medical Systems' order fulfillment system. This service entails a one-time start-up fee for the system's customization between the OEM's equipment and Delphi Medical Systems' system. The flat monthly fees will vary depending on the number of machines in the system and amount of information being provided for each connected machine. OEMs can start using the "virtual technician" service as soon as the system is customized to their specifications.
