Straight to the Point
Extending the reach of healthcare providers, the Delphi VitalPoint™ Home Monitoring System is efficiently helping meet an unprecedented demand for advanced healthcare services.
Home Sweet Home The Delphi VitalPoint Home Monitor is part of an ever-expanding portfolio of cutting-edge medical technology from Delphi Medical Systems. The monitor adds a new dimension to patient care by enabling homecare agencies and extended care facilities to efficiently maintain close contact with patients from remote locations. It is also ideally suited for physician offices looking to expand their practices without incurring physical expansion costs. It is the connectivity capability that allows caregivers to place monitors with multiple patients and check in on each from a remote location, helping streamline virtually any practice. And that can help lead to significant savings by minimizing visits to a patient's home making better use of increasingly limited nursing resources. Simply knowing they are in constant touch with a caregiver can also help encourage patients to comply with their medication and physician's instructions, keeping them healthier and helping reduce strain on clinics and hospitals. And the monitor opens up new levels of freedom for patients, by helping them efficiently manage a host of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by enabling timely intervention and care -- all from the comfort of a patient's own home. "Patients want flexibility, better quality of life, and time savings, and healthcare professionals want to give the best care to all of their patients, and grow their practice without necessarily growing their physical office or supporting structure," added Jeff Jorge, global business development manager, Delphi Medical Systems. "The VitalPoint Home Monitor gives them the ability to 'see' more patients daily, and the assurance that if there is a problem, the doctor will be able to help thanks to the remote vital signs monitoring technology." Keeping in Touch Available now, the Delphi VitalPoint Home Monitor is easy to set up and use for caregivers and patients alike, making it easy for patients to collect their own vital signs through non-invasive sensors, including a blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter sensor, temperature probe, glucometer, and weight scale. The monitor can read a patient's blood pressure, glucose level, pulse rate, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, temperature, and weight. (Later in 2006, Delphi plans to introduce additional parameter-monitoring capabilities.) The monitor also helps patients report to their caregivers whether or not they have been taking their medication, and if they are experiencing any other non-emergency symptoms. Such monitor capability helps ensure patient compliance, which is inherently focused on improved healing, reduced patient re-admission to hospitals, and on a homecare agency's performance. When the patient is finished taking measurements and entering other feedback, the VitalPoint Home Monitor automatically sends the information to a secure, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant Delphi Medical Systems server via a regular phone line. Then the caregiver simply logs onto a secure website from a PC to analyze the data or respond to any alerts generated by the system (which helps reduce costs associated with unnecessary visits to the emergency room). Or, for even more convenience, users can check in via a laptop PC or even a handheld PDA, virtually anywhere at any time. "While VitalPoint Home can't replace all face-to-face visits between the health practitioner and the patient every time, it can help limit visits and keep patients better connected with their caregivers, actually extending the doctor's reach and ability to help," said Jeff Jorge, "Imagine a patient with a chronic illness who now only has to make an arduous trip to the doctor once a month, unless their caregiver sees something that requires unscheduled attention. The complete system enhances a caregiver's potential by enabling them to keep in close contact with multiple patients at the same time. And very importantly, patients have stated they appreciate the feeling of empowerment and well-being that such remote-monitoring capability has granted them, enabling independence and more time to focus on healing at home." Caregivers can even use the Delphi system to send messages to their patients reminding them to check a specific vital sign, take medication, and more. Additional options allow caregivers to receive SMS (short message service) messages, emails, or voice mails to alert them of any issues that may require immediate attention. And its intelligent system design can improve billing, capital equipment, and disposables inventory management, and other practice management capabilities. Enhancing Possibilities Delphi Medical Systems draws on the experience and expertise of Delphi, which has extensive capabilities in wireless technology, electronic controls, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), human interfaces, and power management to develop the VitalPoint monitor. The result is a lightweight device that can be conveniently placed on any flat surface near a power outlet and a phone jack. It features an intuitive, simple touch-screen interface that instills confidence in the user and can help promote compliance. On the display, users can observe detailed, illustrated instructions for each activity, along with clear voice prompts. "The VitalPoint Home Monitor is designed for all patients, even those who are not technology savvy, by providing them an easy to use touch screen," said Jorge. "It provides reminders to patients and gives them simple visual as well as verbal instructions while using the system." The Delphi system offers added versatility by being able to be connected to non-Delphi medical devices for enhanced patient care. And Delphi also offers a clinical version of VitalPoint, packed with features and functions that help enhance efficient and accurate patient monitoring. The sub-acute, alternate care-targeted VitalPoint helps monitor a patient's vital signs via non-invasive sensors, yielding accurate and reliable measurements of physiological parameters such as heart rate, respiration rate, pulse rate, functional oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin, blood pressure (systolic, mean, and diastolic), ECG, and temperature.
